Cold air intake is always a good upgrade, and a 6 pos chip with some custom tunes wakes them up pretty good

With all the miles on her, is it a good idea to throw on a tuner?

I just did a 7.3 with 225,000 from stock to 543 h.p. on the dyno, he still pulls his race quads and trailer no problems yet. If its a good running truck you should have no problems.

Twice stock hp? what else did you change?

One big limiting factor on a stock '99 is the auto tranny (the 6 speed is fine). If it's an auto with a bunch of miles on it, and/or if it's plowed or towed a lot, then watch the mods prior to getting the thing updated.

yep the 4r100 is a weak tranny once modded and abused i think they will go alot faster then a 48re, if you baby them and dont hot rod them around then they will last quite awhile. but like stated cold air intake will help, and i cant remember off the top of my head what exhaust comes stock on the 99 I want to say it might be four inch allready, but they make some pretty decent 4" and 5" kits for them. And like stated the 6 position chips will really wake the truck up and you can get alot of different settings on them like high idle, valet, and no start. Those are the main easy upgrades on them, and I would also get some gauges on it also. Boost, tranny and egt. The egts can get pretty hot on the 7.3's when dumping in alot of tuning, so something to watch out for.
