both of these motors where stepping stones to get to the duramax. The 6.2 and 6.5 gave chevy a bad name for diesels

The first generation 6.5 as well as the non-turbo 6.2 were known to have their share of problems, but not any more than the other diesels of the same era. The 6.5 has undergone extensive metallurgy and internal redesign and there is now a 3rd Gen 6.5 (the Optimizer block) in production. Its best known use is powering the HMMWV for the U.S. Military. I have personally worked with, on, and modded these motors, and while they are a limited performance-mod platform, they are a fantastic work engine when used as intended by the factory. Ok, so maybe they aren't able to take abuse and neglect that some owners subject them to, but really. Maintenance anybody?? Oops. Did I say a dirty word...

We had a 93 with the 6.5 in it and that's the reason my dad switched to the cummins. He had to put 3 motors in it! something about some oil line that rubbed a hole in it and it lost the oil going down the road, I don't remember the other two issues. I stuck it out with GM and now i have a Duramax that sparks my dads cummins.

I have a 1994 6.5 that is up over 300,000 miles, but it is in a babied 1500 that has maybe pulled a Bobcat twice in it's life. I went through two PMDs before I thought to buy a Heat Sync. I a minor tranny issue and the lift pump is prone to fail because it's wired to a faulty oil pressure switch. That is the entire list of drivetrain issues the truck has had in it's whole life. It's not an engine you can neglect.
